Asus covers a wide range, from thin ZenBook ultrabooks through budget VivoBooks to ROG gaming laptops, and each line tends to fail in its own particular way rather than sharing one common fault.
VivoBook
Asus's budget line follows the pattern most budget laptops do, screens and keyboards being the common failures, and the repair-or-replace decision comes down to the machine's age more than anything specific to Asus.
ROG gaming laptops
Thermal management is the recurring theme, dust and dried thermal paste causing throttling and shutdowns under load well before anything else on the machine fails. See our overheating and fan repair page for what a clean and repaste actually involves.
Common questions
Is the hinge cracking a known issue on ZenBooks?
On several models, yes, particularly where the hinge meets a thin aluminium lid. It shows up as a hairline crack near the hinge after a couple of years of normal opening and closing.
How available are parts for Asus laptops in Australia?
Reasonable for ZenBook and VivoBook, since they sell in volume here. ROG gaming parts and unusual models sometimes take longer to source, which we'll tell you before booking.
My ROG laptop is loud and throttling under load. Is that normal?
Some fan noise under heavy load is normal for a gaming laptop. Constant loud running or throttling during light use usually means dust buildup or dried thermal paste, see our overheating and fan repair page.
