There are really two different problems that both get called "a broken screen". One is the glass or panel itself, cracked, showing lines, or leaking colour from a corner. The other is everything behind it, a graphics chip, a loose cable, a backlight, that happens to leave you staring at a screen with nothing on it. Only the first one needs a new panel.
Which one you've got
If there's a visible crack, a spiderweb of lines, or patches of colour bleeding across the display, that's the panel. Straightforward, and the fix is exactly what it sounds like.
If the screen is completely black but the laptop is clearly running, fan spinning, keyboard lights on, caps lock still toggling, plug it into an external monitor or TV with an HDMI cable. If the picture shows up fine on the external display, the panel or its cable is the problem. If the external display is blank too, the fault is further back, usually the graphics chip or the motherboard, and a new screen won't fix it.
What it costs
$180 to $470, parts and labour together. The range comes down to the panel itself: a basic panel out of a budget laptop sits at the lower end, and a touchscreen or high-resolution panel out of a business ultrabook sits at the top.

Common questions
Does screen size change the price?
A little. A 13-inch panel and a 17-inch panel aren't the same cost, and a touchscreen is more expensive again because of the digitiser layer underneath the glass.
Can you match a touchscreen?
Yes, as long as we fit the right panel type for your model. Fitting a non-touch panel to a touch laptop is possible but means losing the touch function, and we'll always ask first.
Will I lose my files?
No. A screen replacement never touches the hard drive or SSD. Everything on the machine stays exactly as it was.
How long does it take?
Same day in most cases if the panel is in stock. Uncommon sizes or touchscreen panels sometimes need ordering, which we'll tell you before booking.
